Volunteer Opportunities


Sacred Heart Religious Education Volunteer Program
EXPLANATION OF SERVICES

Sacred Heart Religious Education Program operates on a volunteer system. It is expected that all parents who enroll their children in the religion program sign up for at least one area of volunteer service. It is an excellent way of giving witness to our faith.

Catechist - regular teacher for a class; there are generally two per class (In-service provided)

Catechist Aide - assistant to the catechists during class time.

Substitute Catechist - someone the DRE may call to substitute, if the regular catechist is unable to be present.

Special Needs Aide - the aide works directly with students requiring additional help.

Tutor - works with students, who may come from another diocese and have not yet been prepared for Eucharist or Reconciliation (Perhaps 6 sessions)

Room Parent

General Responsibilities -

  • Organize schedule of parents to bring snacks for Sunday classes for those classes requesting it.
  • Contacting the catechists to discuss ways you can be of assistance.
  • Serving as a general contact person between the catechist and parents of your class.
  • Providing support, if needed, for classroom activities.
  • Assist with service projects as needed.
  • Assist with transportation, when requested.

Grade Level Responsibilities

Kindergarten: Room Parents from all kindergarten classes will join the 5th and 6th Grade Room parents to host the Religious Education Christmas Party, after the 3rd Grade Christmas Pageant. This party involves a simple buffet of juice, coffee, bakery goods, and fruit.

First Grade: Prepare and serve refreshments for 2nd grade class, after the First Reconciliation Celebration. This will involve organizing the 1st grade parents to bring food for the brunch, set-up and clean-up.

Second Grade: All 2nd grade room parents will organize and decide the following:

  • Take pictures for class banner
  • Prepare First Communion class banner for the Church
  • Purchase materials for the individual banners and prepare individual packets

Third Grade: Assist the pageant director in the production of the 3rd grade Christmas Pageant.

  • Responsible for costumes
  • Assist the Pageant Director at practices and actual Pageant
  • Provide props as needed

Fourth Grade: Prepare and serve refreshments for 2nd grade retreat.

Fifth Grade: Join the Kindergarten and 6th Grade Room Parents to prepare refreshments and bakery goods for the Christmas Party.

Sixth Grade: Join the Kindergarten and 5th Grade Room Parents to prepare refreshments and bakery goods for the Christmas Party.

Seventh Grade: Plan and prepare the retreat meal for 7th grade. Prepare and host the 8th grade Confirmation Reception.

Eighth Grade: Prepare the Confirmation banner for church. Plan and serve Retreat Luncheon

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Traffic Control - Sundays 10:05 A.M. - 10:25 A.M. - Assist children crossing street. (Sign-up sheets at beginning of year - one or more Sundays per year.)

Traffic Control - Wednesdays 8:05 A.M. - 8:30 P.M. - one or more Wednesdays per year.

Facilities Committee - assist in setting up gym or church for designated events. Usually, Saturday 4 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. (Sign-up sheets at beginning of year.)

Hall Supervision - Sunday - 8:45 - 10:20 A.M. or Wednesday - 6:45 - 8:20 P.M.

Office Assistant - Sunday - 8:45 - 10:15 A.M. or Wednesday 6:45 - 8:15 P.M.

Newsletter - Type and prepare newsletter 4 times per year

Assist with Liturgy of the Word - Sunday - 10:30 A.M. - 11 A.M.

Retreat Leader - Grade 2 - 3 hours on a Saturday assisting with First Communion Retreat
